Alumni/ae Survey Provides Crucial Insights for Curriculum Design

Thank you, Andover Newton alums and Yale Divinity School UCC and ABC(USA) alums. With 317 respondents, spending on average 12 minutes on an alumni/ae survey, you dedicated more than 3,800 precious minutes to sharing your thoughts on what skills, knowledge, and attitudes are important to ministry.

Here is a sample of what we learned:

  5. Cultivating and demonstrating strong personal faith

Participants named the following areas of knowledge as the ones upon which they draw most regularly from their seminary educations:

  1. Scripture
  2. Pastoral care
  3. Theology
  4. Worship
  5. Spirituality

The following competencies were named as most important for ministry:

  1. Integrity and trust
  2. Listening
  3. Compassion
  4. Ethics and values
  5. Understanding others

The top five most influential integrative learning experiences were:

  1. Clinical Pastoral Education
  2. Mentoring relationships outside the seminary/divinity school

As the faculty of Andover Newton Seminary at Yale Divinity School construct the educational program that will lead to Andover Newton’s seal of approval, we will consult and reflect upon the findings of this survey regularly. Alums, thank you for sharing your wisdom.
