Site Description

DESCRIPTION OF CHURCH AND LOCATIONSize of congregation: 400 with average attendance of 180 and average church school attendance of 70.Population of town and location: North Reading is a middle class bedroom community of about 13,000 located 15 miles north of Boston. It is easily accessible from Routes 93 and 128.Description of church: Union Congregational Church is a growing and active church. We are a congregation with a good mix of ages and a healthy balance between reaching up and reaching out in faith. The goal of the Union Congregational Church is to offer each person a "place to land," a place to feel at home and a place to grow in his/her faith. We have a positive identity. Based on the teachings of Christ to be loving and forgiving, it is our aim to be affirming, progressive and hopeful. Description of community: In many ways North Reading is a typical suburban community where the quality of life is good. It is also a community, however, that is struggling to find answers to the usual problems of substance abuse among its youth, the needs of its older residents and affordable housing. North Reading is an excellent setting for a student minister who wishes to experience ministry in a suburban location.

Student Involvement

OPPORTUNIES FOR MINISTRYIn a growing and active church, there are many needs and opportunities for ministry that are available. Our intention, therefore, is to provide our student minister with an opportunity to experience a full range of pastoral duties. This would include but not be limited to: Weekly participation in worship Opportunity to preach a minimum of 4 times a year Adult Christian Education Pastoral visitations in a variety of settings Participation in leading the Sacraments and rites of the Church Hands on mission ministries Other areas as agreed upon

Commitment to Educating Ministers

MISSION STATEMENTOur goal is to provide the student minister with a setting in which he/she can experience as broad a range of pastoral experiences as possible. It is our hope that both the student and the church will grow and benefit by participating in the field education program. The congregation has a very good understanding of what it means to be a teaching parish and considers this a very important ministry. It is viewed as an opportunity to walk with the student in his or her journey toward ordained ministry and to grow with the student. To that end our Teaching Parish Ministry (Committee) will work closely with the pastor and other appropriate Ministries to ensure that the church provides a positive learning experience for the student minister.Specifically, Union Congregational Church agrees to honor the responsibilities for the local parish established by Andover-Newton and outlines in the "Mutual Responsibilities" document. The church specifically understands that the student minister: Will work from mid-September to mid-May and that the stipend for the 06/07 year is $3,000. Will allow two or three weeks vacation at a mutually agreed upon time.
