Site Description

Description of the Congregation The Northwood Congregational Church, UCC has approximately 140 members, and worship attendance from 50-75 on a regular basis. We have a good mix of ages so there are infants to seniors present in our activities. Our church was established in the 1790's but shut down completely in the 1940's due to difficult times in the town. In 1988, it was reopened as a United Church of Christ congregation, with 18 people joining and 11 children baptized. Since then, the church has worked hard to make this a successful community of faith, and in doing so has taken great responsibility for building a healthy congregation. With just a few exceptions, the congregation is white and middle class. Our membership has many college educated people, but few professionals, as our members mostly work as State Employees, artists, entrepreneurs and teachers. We also have a large retired community, many of whom are in the South for the winter, but bring vitality and commitment to the church during the summer months.Description of the Community Northwood, New Hampshire is located half-way between Concord and Portsmouth, NH. It is a rural community where most of its citizens leave the town to work. The larger towns of Concord, Dover, Portsmouth are where most people either work or find doctors, hospitals, and shopping. It is a pretty homogeneous community which is set among several lakes and a state park. The church draws most of its members from Northwood and two surrounding towns: Strafford and Barrington.

Stipend Expectation

This site does not meet the stipend expectation

Student Involvement

We will work with the student to design a field education experience to meet their gifts and goals, however, we would hope that the student would be involved regularly with worship leadership and planning as this is the central experience of our community. We are looking to strengthen our leadership in providing mission opportunities, strengthening spiritual growth, conscious community building, Youth outreach, and redesigning our Christian Education approach. So we would like the student to identify the areas they would like to be involved with and we would have them focus their attention appropriately.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

The Northwood Congregational Church, UCC has been a Field Education site in the past when the previous minister was a trained supervisor. The church is a healthy and growing congregation which has been very willing to support students in their call to ministry, and take seriously the opportunity they have in ministerial formation. There is a significant pool of people who have had experience on teaching parish committees and the congregation has benefitted from the Field Education Students we have had in the past. This is a congregation where the people are very involved in the running and decision-making of the church, with the church able to cover, with only periodic support, the minister’s three month Sabbatical. So it fits nicely into the empowerment of the lay people for ministry that we would have a teaching parish committee to guide a field education student. This congregation is also seeking this year to determine where God is calling this church now that it has some stability after having worked so hard to become a viable church. And in this discernment, it is clear there are several areas that the church would like to increase its effectiveness in ministry. A field education student could help us to envision and implement better ministry here.

Comments

Our budget year is September - August, and we are in the midst of developing and approving our budget. Once the budget is approved then we will work to meet the stipend expectations.
