Site Description

Plymouth Church is a vibrant and active U.C.C. congregation with a worship average of about 70 people, located in Belmont, Massachusetts. We are a welcoming and joyful community of God with a strong and active laity, regularly adding new members and has a growing nursery (children 4 and under). We are in the Open and Affirming process, and may vote on a covenant before the academic year begins. We use the Narrative Lectionary in worship (narrativelectionary.org) and provide regular opportunities for our student minister to preach. We are currently focusing in three areas: 1) Small Groups 2) Mission and 3) Being Biblically rooted. Some of our key ministries include: Soup ministry for people in temporary housing, Table Fellowship (small dinner groups), Pub Theology, Operating the Belmont Food Pantry the fourth Sunday of the month, choir, and our Sunday morning spiritual formation group before worship. We have been a teaching parish for many decades, with past seminarians including Professor Mark Heim, Diane Seaborn, Nancy Haynes, and Ellen Rohan Ball. We pay the full stipend and even provide office space to securely store things at the church and have confidential meetings.

Student Involvement

We are open to many different types of students and their interests, however the ideal candidate is someone with interest in serving a UCC congregation as an ordained minister, who is interested in gaining experience in worship and preaching. We do not have many set expectations of our seminarian, but work with the student's learning goals before assigning responsibilities. Often students lead a small group, like a Bible Study or a Pub Theology series when it suites their learning goals. Rev. Joe Zarro is an experienced supervisor, and the Teaching Parish Committee consists of helpful lay leaders who have seen seminarians of varying interests and personalities.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

Plymouth has a long tradition as a Teaching Parish. Seminarians and interns enrich the life of our congregation, bringing new energy and ideas, while gaining valuable experience in many aspects of ministry. Plymouth makes an effort to coordinate its pastoral needs with the needs and interests of the seminarian. Past seminarians include Ellen Rohan-Ball, Kathleen Kopitsky, William Main, Rev. Dr. Marian Williams, Lella Baker, Rev. Patrice Ficken, Rev. Benjamin Davis, Rev. Lael Atkinson, Diane Seaborn and Nancy Haynes. Plymouth members who have recently attended ANTS and have been in care at Plymouth include Rev. Amanda Howland, Heather Lucas and Diana Donahue.

Special Considerations

The nearest bus stop is only one block from the church and the commuter train station is within two blocks, making us very accessible by public transportation.

Comments

Rev. Joe is a graduate of Harvard Divinity School ('09) with 6 years of experience ordained ministry, including previously supervising three seminarians. He enjoys the work of supervision and loves giving students opportunities to grow, including shadowing him on weddings, funerals, baptism and other rites/sacraments to learn through doing.
