Site Description

Smith Mills is a suburban church in a time of transition and interim ministry. Our Membership of 180 is drawn from Dartmouth, New Bedford and Westport. We are a congregation of diverse membership, with people of varied vocational and theological backgrounds. Many new members are former Roman Catholics. The church sponsors a pre-school nursery/kindergarten. The church has sponsored Scouting for decades and hosts several Cub, Brownie, Girl and Boy Scout groups. We are handicapped accessible and only a short walk from a local bus stop. Our roots in the UCC are of the Christian tradition, centered around the 6 Christian Principles shared by a traveling preacher over 165 years ago. These principles are still in our bylaws, and bits of this tradition still manifest in our culture as an emphasis on personal conscience in matters of faith.

Student Involvement

Smith Mills has many committees. The student will be encouraged to participate in the polity and structure of the congregation as fits the student's needs for development. He/she will have the opportunity to participate and lead Bible Study, Sunday worship, and even develop a small group or ministry. The student will practice both solo and jointly with the pastor in hospital and nursing home visitation and will be encouraged to participate authentically in the sacraments, funeral services and weddings as appropriate.During this interim time, the student will have the opportunity to participate in activities around identity, history, connection to the UCC, and congregational values that are unique to the interim time. There will be a clear boundary around this interim time that will need to be addressed explicitly in our covenant of mutual learning so that roles are clear.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

Our congregation's story has been strongly influenced by a positive relationship with a field education student during Fall Semester 2006. As a result, there is a strong urge to engage in this ministry. During this time of transition for our congregation, much is changing for us, so there are a variety of possibilities for the type of support the student might experience. Our commitment springs from the joy and new awareness that we still carry with us from our last student minister, who worked with us as we transformed our altar and preaching area into a wheel-chair accessible area as we saw the need with her to make it a space that she could access. What new aspect of our values might you bring to light for us?

Special Considerations

Our congregation is engaged in an Intentional Interim Ministry. This has many blessings and pitfalls for a potential relationship with a student. Please contact Interim Minister Royce Tevis with questions about the unique challenges and joys associated with this time.

Comments

As with many congregations, this is something that will be a concern, but we are confident that we can put this together.
