Site Description

Somerville Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) is an elder services agency primarily serving the communities of Somerville and Cambridge, but with programs that serve clients throughout greater Boston. We help elders, younger disabled adults and their caregivers to stay at home in the community, and to live with dignity by providing information and services to promote health and well-being. We have identified social isolation, loneliness and depression as key, often unmet, needs of many of our clients. We are working on mental health outreach and home based mental health care for elders, and on integrated community medical care with local hospitals and medical practitioners. Yet, spiritual care has been a missing element, particularly for many homebound elders who have not maintained an active affiliation with a local congregation or faith community, and may well be an answer for many clients that helps them stay at home in good health. So we are developing an Aging and Spiritual Well-being Program with three initial ministry components: Spiritual care giving volunteers using the Stephen Ministries model (www.stephenministries.org) targeted at isolated home bound elders; Spirituality peer discussion or reading or study or activity (hymn singing, religious art, movement?) "meetup" groups for elders who are able to get out; and Spiritual sharing links—a peer scripture or inspirational reading phone tree and daily check in.

Stipend Expectation

This site meets the stipend expectation

Student Involvement

The seminary intern would participate in a 50 hour pastoral care training program and then be assigned at least one care receiver. The intern would be responsible for setting up and facilitating one or more meet-up groups, and for setting up and providing resources for sharing links. The intern would be doing outreach to recruit caregiving volunteers and participants, and to train people within the agency and in the community about program referrals. We will be working to include Catholic, Protestant, UU, Greek Orthodox, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist and other faith community representatives in our program. We would provide the opportunity to learn about: pastoral care-giving in non-institutional settings; community and elder ministry; collaborations with other care-giving professionals in a community setting; and what it means to live and talk about faith and spirituality in secular settings with people from different ethnic and faith backgrounds.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

As an agency we believe that creating opportunities for learning about working with elders is an important part of one of our key strategic goals: transforming community understanding of what it means to be growing older. We are regularly an internship site for social work students and nutrition students. Deciding to become a teaching site seems like a natural extension of this part of our mission as we develop the Aging and Spiritual Well-being program. We believe that we need to think outside the traditional "box" in ways to recognize and meet spiritual needs, so having a seminary student here will help as we put a program into action in a secular organization, not just in doing the nuts and bolts of caregiving and program organization, but in keeping a spiritual focus for the program in a secular agency.

Special Considerations

Our offices are near public transportation, but a car could be helpful, although not necessary. This site would probably not require a Sunday morning commitment at the same place, but it might be a time when the seminary intern would visit local congregations to do outreach.Experience/training as a Stephen Minister would be a big plus. We are open to qualified seminary interns of any faith background.
