Site Description

South Church in Andover marks its 300th anniversary this year and extends an enthusiastic invitation for a field education placement. Andover Newton and South Church have enjoyed strong ties since the founding of Andover Theological Seminary right up the street in 1807. We are a lively congregation of close to 700 members and 200 children and youth, with about 300 usually attending our Sunday worship service. Our members come from Andover, surrounding towns, and even New Hampshire, and by our service and outreach we sustain an active presence in the Merrimack Valley. We are an open and affirming, Christ-centered community that celebratesthe love of God. We seek to learn and grow together in the HolySpirit, allowing the Scriptures to guide our faith and our dailylives. We seek to respond faithfully to God's call for justice for all creation, striving to embody Jesus' model of loving acceptance. We seek to create asanctuary where all will know they are welcomed and included, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, raceand ethnicity, physical and mental ability or economic circumstance, into the full life and ministry of South Church.South Church strives to be a center for spiritual renewal and service,an academy for teaching and learning, and a caring community. Childrenand youth are never considered a distraction but rather are welcomed, cherished, included, and valued as an integral part of our communityof faith. Alongside them, we seek to explore the terms of our faithcritically and practically.

Student Involvement

A field education experience at South Church will afford opportunities to exercise a wide and useful repertoire of ministerial skills. The student will be able to assist in worship and participate or preach in services at Edgewood (retirement community served by South Church), provide leadership for Youth Group, and join in our recent initiative for small group ministry. As one of the largest U.C.C. churches in Massachusetts, South Church will also help the student learn how a host of outreach, educational, service and mission projects are coordinated. This field education opportunity would be well-suited for a student interested in gaining experience in a large church multi-staff setting.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

South Church is greatly looking forward to a field education student joining our community. In addition to offering mentoring through our staff, we will support the student with a TPC composed of church members experienced in different facets of South Church, including service, worship, youth group, finances, and Christian education.
