Community Worship

Community worship takes place every Wednesday when classes are in session. For the 2017-18 academic year, worship will be held in the Dome Room Chapel in the Trask Building.

Community worship is open to all, including students, faculty, staff, alumni/ae and guests. Services are led primarily by our faculty members with help from students, staff, and community partners. Community worship draws widely from the liturgical repertoires of the many faith traditions of the community. Services generally include music, a reading from scripture, a sermon, and time for prayer and silence.

For those who love to sing, the Andover Newton Chapel Choir is always looking for more voices. The chapel choir, which is made up of students, staff, and faculty, rehearses on Wednesdays before the community worship service. This choir is gathered “pick-up” style, where all those who are willing and able to sing need only show up and learn the songs. So come and help us lead worship each week through the ministry of music.

Finally, community worship is an opportunity to use the gifts of the community for the glory of God and for the edification of God’s people. We want to make space for your gifts in worship. What gives you joy that surpasses all understanding? What do you do that makes God smile? Do you sing? Play an instrument? Sew quilts? Paint landscapes? Build houses? Fix carburetors? We can make room for your gift. We invite you to contact us about what you would like to offer to community worship. Maybe your gift is critical feedback. We welcome that too.

Other worship leaders we are welcoming this year include:

  • Rev. Dr. Mikel Satcher, Dean of Students, on October 4.
  • Rev. Nancy Lois, Director of the Library, on November 8.
  • Rev. Brent Newberry, an alumni and a member of the Board of Trustees on December 6.
  • Ellen Willert, M.Div. candidate, on Ash Wednesday, February 14.
  • The UUCANS group on Earth Day, April 25.

We will be holding our Annual Christmas Pageant on December 13. Please contact me if you are interested in helping with this service or another service during the year.

Many gifts and talents come together to strengthen the heart and soul of the community and to express our gratitude to God. Your input is always appreciated whether it be to plan a service, lead a service, arrange the space, greet all who enter, make music, or offer suggestions of ways to be together in community for spiritual nurture and care. We need and want to hear from you.
