Site Description

• We are a rural-suburban Unitarian Universalist church• Our current membership is approximately 260 adults and 130 children, and our weekly worship attendance is approximately 130 adults and 80 children. • In 2001 we had a membership of 157 adults and 70 children with weekly attendance of 74 adults and 35 children; we are definitely a growing congregation.• We are largely a Caucasian-American community, and the majority of our members are middle and upper-middle class.• Our membership consists of all age groups with the exception the “20 something” crowd.• We come from a wide range of religious traditions and backgrounds. We are “religious liberals.”• We earned the status of “Welcoming Congregation” in 2002.• In 2010 we were designated a "Breakthrough Congregation" by UUA.• With the vitality to raise substantial funds from the congregation in a down-turning economy, we have successfully added to our physical plant with new teaching, meeting and welcoming facilities, opened in April 2011.

Student Involvement

• Work with our Director of Religious Education on religious education, with special emphasis on the high school students and their “senior youth group”.• Participate in and lead worship, guided by the Senior Minister.• Witness how we define and carry out our church mission, establish the budget, maintain financial health and make decisions.• Work with our Social Action committee to help achieve its vision and mission to provide meaningful and diverse activities that will stimulate wider congregational participation in serving the cause of justice.• Participate in the work of the Caring Committee and Lay Pastoral Care Ministry team, especially with regard to visiting house-bound parishioners and other pastoral duties.• Gain familiarity with governance by attending standing committee meetings and Board of Directors and Finance Committee meetings, on a limited basis.• Participate in and observe the annual stewardship fund drive.• Originate and autonomously conduct special events/workshops for members of the congregation

Commitment to Educating Ministers

We have had gratifying success with our participation in the ministerial intern process. In a multitude of ways our student ministers and the congregation have built relationships that mutually benefit and nourish both parties. Our church continues to provide a wonderful, rich learning environment for a future minister. We have:• a dynamic and committed minister;• an emerging Life-Span Faith Development Program, which plans to hire an Assistant Minister to lead the program in the Fall of 2014.• a Lay Pastoral Care Program; • committees that flourish with an abundance of spiritual growth and outreach programs;• an expanding, enthusiastic congregation.Through energy, ideas and hard work, our interns have had deep and broad opportunities for personal and professional growth. We take pride in being a Teaching Parish Community, helping to develop ministers whom we hope will in turn help strengthen our denomination.

Special Considerations

• Our church is located in a wonderful, historic building (with the brand new add-on) in the center of Sherborn about 18 miles west of Boston.• Our congregation is made up of people from about 16 area towns, although the majority live in Sherborn, Holliston, and Natick. (Less than half the membership actually lives in Sherborn.)• The diversification of the location of our members enhances our social and economic diversity.• Sherborn is a quaint, rural-suburban town with no available public transportation.
