Site Description

The United Church of Christ in Keene was established in 1738 as the meetinghouse on the common and continues to be the focal point of the community, often referred to as “the big white church at the head of the square.” We have 664 members, approximately 100 of whom serve as lay leaders and committee members. The church organization has three ministries: the Ministry of Spiritual Life and Formation, the Ministry of Outreach and Mission, and the Ministry of Stewardship and Resources. Many more people engage in outreach ministries. During Lent, 90 people pledged to participate in our expanded caring ministries, providing meals, visits, transportation, and personal contact to others in our church family at times of need or celebration. At our Annual Meeting on 6/12/11 we became an Open and Affirming church with 96% of the people in attendance voting for the motion. During the past year, significant work has been invested in rebuilding our youth ministry programs in consultation with Youth Ministry Architects. Worship services are at 8 am and 10 am every Sunday, with live broadcast of the main service on a local radio station. Alternative worship services are scheduled on a monthly basis and during special times of the church calendar, such as Advent and Lent.

Stipend Expectation

This site meets the stipend expectation

Student Involvement

Field education students at our church will have an opportunity to experience a broad range of pastoral responsibilities and involvement. We will encourage students to bring their own gifts to their learning by picking out a primary area such as ministry with young adults, creating worship experiences or starting small ministry groups. Students will be assisting in worship, participating in church boards, visiting the sick and homebound, officiating at a funeral and possibly participating in marriage preparation and a wedding. The student will be supervised by Senior Minister Gordon Ellis.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

Our church is excited about the possibilities for expanded ministries and fresh ideas that may result from our becoming a Teaching Parish. We will take seriously our responsibility for seminary student development in order to help prepare the next generation of pastoral leaders. The TPC Committee, made up of five church members, plans to meet monthly with the field education student starting in September to reflect on his/her experiences and to be a sounding board as he/she discerns his/her gifts for ministry. TPC members will be encouraged to attend the orientation to be offered at ANTS this fall. The church has committed financial resources for our seminarian, both for the TPC program and for tuition assistance. Gordon Ellis, our Senior Pastor, will be the on-site supervisor. We look forward to this mission.

Special Considerations

Safe Church training is required of all adults who will be engaged in ministries with children and youth. A background check with the State of New Hampshire is required as part of this process. Seminarians at this site need to provide their own transportation, housing and meals. In the event that a student does not live in the area, it is possible that a room may be offered by a parishioner to reduce commuting time and housing expenses. Students are encouraged to participate in local ecumenical events and meetings sponsored by the Cheshire Association and the New Hampshire Conference UCC.
