Site Description

United Congregational Church, UCC, is a unique setting for field education. We are offering an urban field ed site that includes the possibility for ministry with the Worcester Area Mission Society WAMS), a close organizational partner of the UCC. Our expectation is that we would offer placement for one student, with the possibility of the student continuing for a second year. United is in Worcester, MA, with about 60-70 in attendance each Sunday. Our informal and intimate worship services are held in a former fellowship room of the building at 6 Institute Rd. In 2011, United “gifted” its building and most of our multi-million dollar endowment to WAMS. WAMS was founded in 1829 for the purposes of furnishing benevolent, spiritual, and educational aid to immigrants working on the Blackstone Canal; today, WAMS' work centers around housing and community development, Service Learning and social policy engagement. WAMS now owns and occupies the former United Church building, along with the offices of the Central Mass Housing Alliance, the Central Association of the MACUCC and the United UCC offices and worship space. United is a very diverse congregation made up of people from every socio-economic level; we were one of the first churches to become ONA and we take seriously our call to be a Just Peace Church. We are rich in our different life experiences and varying beliefs, but our theology is probably best described as progressive, mainline Protestant.

Student Involvement

The primary focus of ministry with United Congregational Church will be involvement in worship (Sunday morning and special services), visitation with less mobile members, once a month teaching Sunday School, outreach and advocacy with social service agencies with which our parishioners interact, and any project the student is interested in pursuing. Because of the unique relationship United has with the Worcester Area Mission Society, a student would be able to connect with one of WAMS’s ministries, to learn more about and experience urban ministry. Some possibilities for engagement through WAMS include: Participating in ReachOut Worcester, an overnight program offered by WAMS in partnership with Worcester Fellowship and the St. John’s Food for the Poor Program that offers young people and adults the opportunity to learn about individual homelessness from those who have experienced it. Attending service provider meetings convened by WAMS' working partner Friends of Families in Transition in communities where emergency motel shelter is being provided for children/ families by the State. Engaging in the development and implementation of events centered around WAMS' Sustainable Massachusetts initiative. Students will be supervised by a Gretchen Switzer, an ordained member of United, and have regular contact with Nancy Elder-Wilfrid, Pastor of United.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

United has a long history of being a field ed site for Andover Newton, beginning when we were a large and active congregation. In recent years, as United went through the demographic transitions common to many urban churches, from a large congregation to a smaller one, there wasn’t a need for a seminarian. In 2012, United once again became a field ed site, and in 2014, we expanded our field ed site to include the possibility of ministry experience with WAMS.

Special Considerations

The building housing WAMS and United is located in Worcester, about an hour’s drive from the Andover Newton campus.

Comments

The student will be funded by a grant received by United for a seminarian. Student Involvement We are excited about the possibilities for this unique ministry setting that will give students an experience of ministry within a parish and ministry in an urban community. We expect students in this field ed site to be motivated, mature, willing to “stretch” and be creative! We expect them to be willing to grow in their faith and to be willing to “see the face of Christ” in all the different people with whom they will minister.
