Site Description

Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, UCC is a downtown church with a vital ministry to the community and beyond. We are the “Church of the Open Door.” We are experienced having seminary students and are very interested in having you join us for time of learning, sharing and reflection. Westbrook is a city in transition from manufacturing to a more Hi Tech environment. Westbrook is home to Sappi Fine Paper a specialty paper manufacturer and is the world headquarters for Idexx Laboratories, which supplies the veterinary industry. Recently, Main Street has undergone changes. It now has two Mexican restaurants, an Indian restaurant, fine Italian dining and the first Hindu Temple of Maine (formerly the First Universalist church). 26 languages are spoken in our schools and we have a working cattle farm and a horse farm in the city too. Westbrook-Warren Church is fortunate to have gifted lay people serving in leadership positions. Our staff is seasoned, personable and professional. We have nearly completed a planning process that will be voted on after Easter. We anticipate an exciting time of change: expanding existing ministries of education and recreation, (becoming a Teaching Parish for ANTS is a part of that vision). We intend to establish closer relationships with our many immigrant neighbors. Also, we expect to explore the Open and Affirming process and address strategic plans around budgeting, finance and church governance. We have hosted seminary students from Bangor Theological Seminary, which benefited the students and the church. We believe we would be a good place for seminarians considering pastoral ministry to test the waters and explore their growing edges Our Pastor, Rev Dr. Ed DeLong, is a graduate of both ANTS and BTS is a strong advocate of Field Education having had wonderful experience and supervision while at ANTS. Won’t you join us?

Student Involvement

Drew McLaren, a middler at ANTS, approached us. Currently he preaches at a small church in the city part time and asked if we might be a place that would offer him exposure to some wider aspects of ministry as a TPC of ANTS. We are open to the needs of the students and would make time for practice in preaching, teaching, administration, mission development etc.We fully understand this is not “cheap labor”, but rather an opportunity for the student to learn and grow in ministry. The church and potential TPC committee members are mature and prepared to do this work.We are aware that we would need to be trained as a committee and that I would need to attend other training at ANTS or possibly Harvard. We have had 2 BTS students and one UCC pastor who did work with us as part of her work to regain her standing in the UCC.I also served as a Mentored practice convener At BTS with a group of about 10 M.Div students.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

In our soon to be adopted Goals related to our new Vision Statement includes becoming a Teaching Parish. It has been discussed previously and already budgeted. The point in our Goal states:· By summer 2015, a team will develop a plan for strengthening our existing community ministries (such as Movies That Matter, informational workshops, LOGOS, being a teaching parish, etc.) and for initiating new ministries that reach out to the community. Our experience with previous students had been very good. We would anticipate a good and positive result.
