Worship and Spiritual Life

Worship is the heart of Andover Newton’s community life and strives to reflect Andover Newton’s denominational diversity as well as the school’s commitment to interfaith dialogue. On-campus chapel and worship opportunities provide focused times for peers and mentors to come together into a single congregation. While members of each faith tradition tend to hold worship services that are based on their own religious practices, services on campus always remain open to the entire community regardless of denominational affiliation.
Weekly Services:
Wednesday Community Chapel
All-community worship takes place every Wednesday when classes are in session at 1:00pm (Please see the Academic Calendar for semester dates.)
At this time, students, faculty and staff gather for an ecumenical service in the Wilson Chapel. This service is usually led by a faculty member in conjunction with a student group or student fellowship, and may include a brief sermon and holy communion. Many of our professors are not only excellent educators, but ordained clergy. These services are also often blessed with music offered by the Andover Newton Chapel Choir.
In addition to weekly worship, some members of the community regularly meet for daily Morning Prayer services. Student groups, such as theUnitarian Universalist Fellowship ( UU) and Black Student Fellowship (BSF) also lead worship services on campus at other times.
Compline (Evening Prayer) is held Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in the lower prayer room of the Wilson Chapel. This service lasts from 9:00pm – 9:15pm and is hosted by the Episcopal Student Fellowship.
There is a time of Music and Meditation every weekday morning from 8:00am to 8:30am in the Main Sanctuary of the Wilson Chapel. This service is followed immediately by Morning Worship, a time for students faculty and staff to gather and worship together at the beginning of each day. Five student liturgists lead Morning Worship regularly and a variety of homilists are scheduled at the beginning of each semester.
Students also gather for informal prayer and worship throughout the year. Several denominational and fellowship groups regularly sponsor events, convening their members for potluck suppers and weekend retreats. The lower level of Wilson Chapel houses a small prayer and meditation room.
The Andover Newton Chapel Choir meets every Wednesday of the semester at noon for practice. All are encouraged to join.
